I am ridiculously happy! How about you?
Only 6 years ago, happy was not an adjective I could have used to describe my life. Don’t get me wrong, things were fine. Work was fine. Life was fine. Everything was fine. But if someone had asked me then if I was ridiculously happy, I would have answered with a laugh that in fact, no, I wasn’t.
Today, I invite you to stop and ask yourself honestly- Am I ridiculously happy?
The thing is, we live in a fast-paced world and sometimes it feels as though life is whizzing by. Between family, work, and whatever other commitments we all have it is rare to take the time to stop and reflect. Do you feel this way too? Overwhelmed. Over-scheduled. Over-committed.
Busy isn’t bad. If you are busy working on things that you are passionate about, it may in fact be the perfect life for you. But sometimes, we become busy without even noticing. We agree to things because we feel obligated, or have good intentions. Slowly, without even realizing it, every moment of our schedules become full and there is no time left for the activities that bring us joy.
Let’s look at how the average working adult is spending their time. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that including travel we spend an average of 8.8 hours a day working. That is more than 1/3rd of our time! Add in some sleep (this varies for each person but should probably be between 6-8 hours each night), eating, and caring for others and your home, and some leisure activities and it is easy to see why we never have time to take a breath!
In his popular Ted Talk How to Make Work-Life Balance Work, Nigel Marsh reminds us that, “If you don’t design your life, someone else will design it for you”. Over the course of our lives, we will work 30-50% of the time! So even if we are deliberately designing a life with intention outside of our working hours, we may missing the chance at true happiness.
Who designed your work life? Was it you? Was it your company? Did you make a conscious choice to do what you are doing now, or did it just sort of happen? Are you working at the times you feel the most refreshed and productive, or the times you boss tells you to? Are you in your present job just for the health care benefits?
Try something with me. Grab a notebook and pen or open a notepad document. Write down the answers to these three questions. Allow yourself the freedom to imagine a world without constraints.
- If you could do anything for work, without worrying about how much money you make, what would you spend your time doing?
- If you could design the time you spend working, forgetting about the standard 9-5 or 8-hour work day, when would you work?
- If you could design the space you work in, remembering there are no rules regarding location, where would it be and what would it look like?
